Brief History

FASO, the Filipino American Student Organization, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison first began in the Fall semester of 1992. Initially, it was referred to Fil-Am and Filipino and American students studying Tagalog.

It started with the Tagalog class of 15 students wanting to be connected to all the Tagalog students at the UW-Madison as well as other students or persons interested in learning the Filipino language and culture, i.e, those who came to the "Tagalog at the Terrace" or "Tagalog sa Terasa" sessions began by Monita Manalo in the fall of 1990, the first instructor to teach Tagalog at UWM. These 15 students were the "largest" Southeast Asian language class at the time. UWM is still one of the few schools in the nation that teaches the Tagalog language.

PURPOSE of FASO: Educational, cultural and social. A bridge to both home and the rest of the world.
